WhatsApp number banned? Stop losing numbers to unofficial tools
Most business numbers are not banned for what they say but for how they send it: through bulk senders, WhatsApp Web bots and modified apps that break WhatsApp's terms. Here is what the ban screen means, what you can do today, and how to message customers at scale without putting the number at risk.
In short
WhatsApp bans numbers that use unofficial or modified apps, send automated or bulk messages through the ordinary app, collect contacts by scraping, or get blocked and reported by people who never asked to hear from them. If it has happened to you: stop the tool, tap Request review in the app, and move your outbound messaging to the official WhatsApp Business Platform.
“This phone number can't use WhatsApp”: what the ban screen means
When WhatsApp bans an account, the app opens on a message that names the number: “This phone number can't use WhatsApp”, followed by the option to request a review. WhatsApp says most reviews are completed within 24 hours. Older versions of the app, and people describing it, also use “This account is not allowed to use WhatsApp” or “This account can no longer use WhatsApp”. They all mean the same thing: the number is banned.
Two milder messages are often mistaken for a ban:
- “Temporarily banned”. WhatsApp shows this when it sees an unofficial app or scraping. Switch to the official app and stop the activity, or the next ban can be permanent.
- “Your account is restricted right now”. A restriction, not a ban, for signs of spam, automated or bulk messaging. You can keep talking to people you have chatted with before, but you cannot start new chats, create groups or use linked devices until the set period ends on its own.
Why WhatsApp bans business numbers
WhatsApp's Terms of Service and Messaging Guidelines are explicit. The usual causes:
- Unofficial or modified apps. GB WhatsApp and other modified apps are, in WhatsApp's own description, fake WhatsApp apps that violate its Terms of Service, and using them can get an account banned.
- Automation and bulk sending through the ordinary app. WhatsApp Web bots, browser extensions and “bulk sender” programs. The Terms of Service name bulk messaging, auto-messaging and auto-dialing as impermissible, and WhatsApp's Help Center says spam, automated or bulk messaging can get an account banned.
- Messages people did not ask for. Every block and every spam report counts against the number, and the Messaging Guidelines list repeated unwanted contact as a violation.
- Bought or scraped lists. Collecting phone numbers or profile data automatically is itself against the rules, and cold messages to a bought list draw blocks and reports.
- Sudden volume from a new number. A fresh number that starts by messaging hundreds of strangers behaves exactly like spam, whatever the intention.
What to do if your number was banned
- Stop the tool first. Uninstall any modified app and disconnect every bot, extension or bulk sender linked to the number. Install the official WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app from the app store.
- Request a review in the app. Open WhatsApp, tap Request review and explain briefly how you use the number. WhatsApp reviews one phone number per appeal, so a business with several banned numbers needs a request for each.
- Do not pay anyone to unban you. WhatsApp states that third-party services cannot ban or unban an account; only WhatsApp can. Writing to support by email or from another account does not speed up the review either.
- Wait for the decision in the app. WhatsApp sends a notification when the review is done. While the number is banned, you cannot open its chat history or backups.
- If there is no review option, the ban is final. Do not move the same tool to a new number: the same behaviour gets the same result. Change how you send first.
- On the WhatsApp Business Platform the process is different. A business using the API sees the violation and requests a review in Business Support Home; Meta says the decision typically takes 24 to 48 hours.
Why unofficial tools get numbers banned
Tools that promise “bulk WhatsApp without ban” usually work by controlling the ordinary app: they connect as a linked device through WhatsApp Web, run inside a browser extension, or replace the app with a modified one. To WhatsApp, that is an unofficial client sending automated messages, which is exactly what its terms forbid. Delays, random pauses and rotating several numbers can postpone a ban; they do not make the tool allowed.
How to tell whether a tool is official
- An official setup goes through a Meta business portfolio and Meta's own sign-up, and the number appears in WhatsApp Manager with a quality rating and a messaging limit.
- The first message to anyone who has not written to you in the last 24 hours goes out as a template Meta approved in advance.
- If a tool needs your phone to stay online, asks you to link it as a WhatsApp Web device to send campaigns, or comes as an APK you install in place of WhatsApp, it is driving the app, not using the platform.
The official way to message customers at scale
The WhatsApp Business Platform is built for exactly what bulk senders fake: one business talking to many customers through software. In return it asks you to follow a few rules.
- Permission first. You need the person's opt-in before you message them, and the opt-in must clearly name your business.
- Templates outside the 24-hour window. When someone writes to you, you have 24 hours to reply freely. To start or restart a conversation after that, you send a template Meta has approved.
- Opt-outs and blocks are respected. Someone who asks you to stop must not be contacted again.
- Growth at the pace quality allows. A business portfolio starts at 250 different people in any rolling 24 hours outside the window, and the limit rises to 2,000, 10,000, 100,000 and then unlimited as you verify the business and keep quality high.
- The quality rating is watched. Blocks and reports lower the rating of your number and your templates, and a low-quality template can be paused.
Can the official platform still restrict a number?
Yes. The official platform removes the risk that comes from the tool, not the risk that comes from how you message. Meta can limit or block a business that gets a lot of negative feedback or breaks the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy. It starts with a warning, then blocks of one or three days on templates, then five, seven or thirty days on all messages, then an account lock that only an appeal lifts. A business that keeps ignoring all of that can be removed from the platform.
The difference is that you see it coming, with a quality rating, warnings and limits you can read, and that you get a formal appeal. And the things that drive quality down are the things LeadMara is built to prevent:
- Permission comes first. The call-permission request is Meta's own, and the answer is kept on the contact.
- Every refusal is kept. Someone who replies STOP, or whom an operator marks Do not call, is never approached again, through any department.
- Nobody is messaged twice by mistake. Duplicates and erased numbers are refused on import, and each contact belongs to one operator.
- The 24-hour window is enforced, not just shown. Free text never goes out where only templates are allowed.
Questions
Why was my WhatsApp Business number banned?
Almost always for one of these reasons: an unofficial or modified app, automated or bulk messages sent through the ordinary app or WhatsApp Web, bought or scraped contact lists, or many people blocking and reporting your messages. WhatsApp’s Terms of Service and Messaging Guidelines list what is not allowed.
How do I get a banned WhatsApp Business account back?
Open the app and tap Request review. WhatsApp says most reviews are completed within 24 hours, and the decision arrives as a notification. If there is no Request review option, the ban is final. Paid unban services cannot help: only WhatsApp can lift a ban.
How long does a WhatsApp ban last?
A restriction ends on its own after a set period, and the app shows how long is left. A temporary ban also ends after a while, but if you keep using an unofficial app the next one can be permanent. A full ban lasts until a review overturns it, and if no review is offered, it is permanent.
Can I send bulk WhatsApp messages without getting banned?
Not with a tool that drives the ordinary app, because that is exactly what WhatsApp forbids. On the official WhatsApp Business Platform you can message many people, as long as each one gave permission, the first message is an approved template, and you stay within your messaging limit.
Can a number still be restricted on the official WhatsApp Business API?
Yes. If many people block or report your messages, or you break the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy, Meta can lower your limits, block sending for a period or lock the account until an appeal. Warnings come first, and you can appeal in Business Support Home. What the official platform removes is the risk of being banned for the tool itself.
How many messages can I send per day on WhatsApp Business?
The WhatsApp Business app is made for one person chatting by hand, and sending the same message to many people who do not know you quickly leads to restrictions. On the WhatsApp Business Platform, the limit counts the different people you message outside the 24-hour window in any rolling 24 hours: 250 for a new business portfolio, then 2,000, 10,000, 100,000 and unlimited as quality and verification allow.
Is GB WhatsApp safe for business?
No. GB WhatsApp is one of the modified apps WhatsApp calls unofficial: using it violates the Terms of Service and can get the number banned, and WhatsApp cannot vouch for its security, which matters when the chats are with your customers.
Move your outbound messaging to the official platform
LeadMara is outbound contact software built on the WhatsApp Business Platform for clinics, agencies and property groups: approved templates, Meta's own call-permission request, a shared inbox, calls and appointment reminders. No more numbers banned for unofficial tools.
